The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) issues the e-passbook i.e EPF passbook to Provident Fund (PF) account holders. The EPF passbook contains all the information that is linked to PF account including contributions, interest earned, withdrawals, etc.
The digital passbook comes in handy in tracking the PF balance, contributions made by the employer, and the interest earned on their PF account. Additionally, the e-passbook can also be used as proof of to detail PF contributions and balance when applying for loans or other financial services.
Notably, the e-passbook faculty for PF account is only available to employees who have registered their UAN number on the EPFO portal. Let’s take a look at how to register the UAN number on the EPFO portal and get access to the EPF passbook.

How to register UAN on EPFO portal
– Visit the official EPFO website – epfindia.gov.in
– Now click on “For Employees” under the “Our Services” section.
— Select the “UAN Member e-Sewa” option from the drop-down menu and click on “Sign in.”
– On the login page, click on the “Activate UAN” located below the login form.
– Enter your UAN, name, date of birth, mobile number, and captcha code in the required fields.
– Click on “Get Authorization PIN.”
– You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and click on “Submit.”
– Once the OTP is verified, you will be prompted to create a password for your UAN account. Enter the password and click on “Submit.”
– As the process is completed, you will receive a confirmation message on your registered mobile number and email address.
– After your UAN is activated, you can log in to your account using your UAN and password.
After the registration of UAN number on the EPFO portal is completed, you will be able to download your EPF passbook after six hours of registration.
How to download EPF passbook online
– Visit the EPFO portal
– Next click on the “For Employees” option in the menu bar and select “Member Passbook”.
– Now enter your UAN (Universal Account Number) and password.
– You will now be able to see your EPF account details.
– Click on the “Download e-passbook” option to download your EPF passbook.
– Select the financial year for which you want to download the e-passbook and enter the captcha code.
– Click on the “Download” to download your EPF passbook online.

How to check EPF passbook balance through SMS
To check EPF passbook balance through SMS make sure you have registered your mobile number on the EPFO portal.
– From your registered mobile number type < EPFOHO UAN ENG > and send the SMS to 7738299899.
The SMS facility is available in a total of 10 languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Punjabi, Telugu, Malayalam and Gujarati. The last three letters in SMS indicate your preferred language. For example, to get the information in english type ENG, for Hindi, you have to send HIN, PUN for Punjabi, GUJ for Gujarati, MAR for Marathi, KAN for Kannada, TEL for Telugu, TAM for Tamil, MAL for Malayalam and BEN for Bengali.
– After sending the SMS, wait a bit. EPFO will reply with an SMS which will include details of your final PF contribution, balance details, and available KYC information.
How to check EPF account balance using phone number
To get your EPF (Employee Provident Fund) details through a missed call make sure that your mobile number is registered with your EPF account.
To get details,
– Dial 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number and give a miss call.
– After the missed call, you will receive an SMS with your EPF account details, including the available balance in your account.
If you have multiple EPF accounts, the SMS will also include details for the latest account activated on the Universal Account Number (UAN).
How to check EPF passbook balance through UMANG app
To check EPF passbook balance on UMANG app,
– Download the UMANG app on your smartphone from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
– Now open the app and tap on the EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization) option.
– If you are using the UMANG app for the first time, you will be asked to register on the app.
– To register, enter your mobile number and click on the ‘Get OTP’ button.
– Enter the OTP received on your mobile number and click on ‘Submit.’
– Next create a username and password for your UMANG account.
– Once you are logged in to your UMANG account, tap on the ‘View Passbook’ option.
– Enter your UAN (Universal Account Number) and click on the ‘Get OTP’ button.
– Now you have to enter the OTP you received on your registered mobile number and click on ‘Login.’
– After OTP verification, you will be able to view your EPF passbook balance on the UMANG app.
