5 herbs that can help with arthritis pain

In the cold months, arthritis patients could suffer immense pain in their joints. Affecting millions of people in India, arthritis is a chronic disease that is caused by inflammation, swelling or stiffness in the joints. 

There are certain herbs that can help ease the pain and manage the disease. Nutritionist Lovneet Batra shared a post on Instagram about herbs that can relieve joint pain. “Arthritis is a chronic condition that affects more than 180 million people in India,” she wrote in the caption.

As per the nutritionist, osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are two major forms of arthritis associated with severe joint pain and reduced quality of life.

“Living with arthritis and bearing all the swelling and pain in the joints is not easy. The movement restriction and unbearable pain can make everyday tasks difficult for arthritis patients. Fortunately, dietary changes can significantly reduce the inflammation and help in managing the disease,” the expert shared, listing five herbs that could provide some comfort to an arthritis patient. 

Aloe vera: It contains anti-inflammatory properties. The gel is packed with anthraquinones that help in relieving arthritis. 

Turmeric (haldi): Its main ingredient, curcumin, has anti-inflammatory properties. 

Thyme: It has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, including the ability to suppress inflammatory molecules called leukotrienes and to synthesize prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation. 

Garlic: Garlic contains diallyl disulphide, an anti-inflammatory compound that decreases the effects of pro-inflammatory cytokines. 

Speaking to indiatoday.in earlier, Dr Naval Mendiratta, Senior Consultant-Rheumatology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram said that people shouldn’t have too many painkillers for relief as it could affect the kidneys. 

“Biological injections are being used now for arthritis. This is an advanced treatment to help the joints from getting bent. The treatment should be done within 6 months of diagnosis,” he had said.
