DU’s fee waiver scheme for economically weaker students receives 1700 applications

Delhi University’s fee waiver programme for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds has received around 1,700 applications, an official said on Thursday.

According to the official, the institution will review the submissions before publishing the final list of students who would be eligible for the Financial Support Scheme (FSS).

The deadline for submitting an application for the programme was January 31.

“We have received around 1,700 applications for the fee waiver scheme so far. The university through this scheme will extend the benefits of equity, access and quality with excellence, both in letter and spirit, to the financially weak students,” the official told PTI.

The DU had made the announcement of the programme in November of last year, in keeping with the spirit of the government’s ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’ motto.

DETAILS ABOUT THE FEE WAIVER SCHEME

The waiver covers all fees with the exception of the exam fees and hostel fees.

Depending on their family’s income, students from disadvantaged economic backgrounds may receive up to a 100% fee remission. It is only open to genuine university students who are enrolled full-time.

“A student with a family income of less than Rs 4 lakh (annually) will be eligible for up to 100 percent fee waiver, while students with a family income of Rs 4 lakh to 8 lakhs can apply for a 50 percent waiver,” the official said.

A list will be made to determine who is eligible for each person based on their family’s income, the official said.

“It will be seen whether the students are eligible for full waiver or half. In case of confusion, we might call the students for an interview,” the official said.

According to the authority, applicants who have ER (essential repeat) or arrears on previous exam papers are not eligible.

The DU had requested that applicants for the programme send copies of their fee receipts, a tehsildar’s or comparable competent authority’s yearly family income certificate for the previous fiscal year, and copies of their parents’ income tax filings, where needed.

Additionally, a copy of a bank passbook with the student’s name, account number, bank’s IFSC code, and a photo pasted where necessary was required.
