The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN)– the government organisation that monitors and alerts on bugs and vulnerabilities in operating systems, has discovered several new vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Edge web browser. Alerting users about the possible cyber attack and exploitation of systems, the organisation has issued a warning regarding these vulnerabilities and classified them as ‘high’ severity.
According to the warning advisory published on CERT-In website “Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) which could be exploited by a remote attacker to gain elevated privilege and bypass security restrictions on the targeted system”.
CERT-IN in its vulnerability notes reveals that the new bugs in the Microsoft Edge browser (Chromium-based) may allow remote cyber attackers to gain more control and access over the targeted systems to steal sensitive data and bypass security restrictions. “These Vulnerabilities exist in Microsoft Edge (Chromium Based). A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending a specially-crafted request on the targeted system,” the note further reads.
Additionally, the vulnerabilities could also allow hackers to send a specially-crafted request on the targeted system.
Versions affected by vulnerabilities in Microsoft Edge
The report states that Microsoft Edge versions prior to version 109.0.1518.61 are affected by the recently detected vulnerabilities.
How to secure systems from vulnerabilities
