WhatsApp gets warning from Indian government, here is what happened

WhatsApp gets into trouble on the last day of 2022 and the Union minister of state for Electronics & Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar had to school the platform on Twitter. So, what went wrong?

The meta-owned instant messaging platform tweeted a video on December 31, 2022 that showed the incorrect map of India. Minutes after the video was posted on the microblogging site, Chandrasekhar pointed out the error with respect to Jammu and Kashmir and asked WhatsApp to immediately make the corrections. The company took prompt action.

Quoting WhatsApp’s tweet, Chandrasekhar wrote, “Dear @WhatsApp – Rqst that u pls fix the India map error asap.” “All platforms that do business in India and/or want to continue to do business in India, must use correct maps,” he further stated.

The good thing is the instant messaging platform was prompt to take action. The platform immediately deleted the post and said, “Thank you Minister for pointing out the unintended error; we have promptly removed the stream, apologies. We will be mindful in the future.”

Well, this isn’t the first time that the union minister corrected Zoom CEO Eric Yuan for a similar reason. Yuan, just like WhatsApp, posted the wrong map of India and Chandrasekhar was quick at pointing out the error and so was the Zoom CEO to correct it.

It was on December 28 that Yuan shared the wrong India map on Twitter and pointing out the issue, Chandrasekhar tweeted “you may want to make sure u use correct maps of the countries u do / want to do business in.” Yuan took down the tweet from his official Twitter account and in a new tweet he wrote, “I recently took down a tweet that many of you had pointed out had issues with the map. Thank you for the feedback!!”
