Despite a significant decline in global crude prices since its peak in June, Indian energy companies have not implemented daily price revisions for almost four months. Oil companies have kept prices unchanged since May 21, 2022, when the government slashed excise duties on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre.

Government data show that India’s average crude oil price fell by 22% to $90.71 per barrel in September from its record of $116.01 in June. OMCs, however, are anticipated to declare losses for the quarter between July and September. It should be emphasised that oil corporations suffered significant losses while oil prices were climbing. For fuel and petrol, Indian oil corporations were losing as much as Rs 20–25 per litre.
