There’s good news for Indian students and those aspiring to bag a seat in the top institutions of the country. A total of 75 Indian institutions have been featured in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023. The number is higher in the upcoming year’s list, compared to 56 Indian institutions in 2020 and only 31 in 2017.
IISc top spot among Indian institutes in list
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has retained the top position among Indian institutes in the ranking, which has been boycotted by most Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for the third consecutive year over transparency concerns.
While it is first among Indian institutions, overall, the IISc is placed in the 251-300 band. Globally, the University of Oxford has emerged as the best institute among 1,799 universities from 104 countries, according to a statement issued by THE.
Shoolini University at 2nd spot
The second position among Indian institutions has been taken by the Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (351-400 overall), which made its debut in the rankings. The Himachal Pradesh-based private university is ranked 96th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022 in the universities category.
IITs on the list
In total, eight IITs feature in this year’s rankings by THE, its spokesperson told The Indian Express.
IIT Ropar, in this year’s edition of THE, had slipped to the sixth position, and to the 501-600 band globally from last year’s 351-400. Among the other IITs which took part in the rankings, IIT Indore is placed in the 601-800 band, followed by IIT Patna and IIT Gandhinagar in the 801-1000 band.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was last featured in the 2020 edition and returns this year in the 1001-1200 band. IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Mandi have bagged positions in this year’s rankings too.
About the rankings
The universities are ranked to assess university performance on the global stage and to provide a resource for readers to understand the different missions and successes of higher education institutions. The rankings cover the three main missions of university activity: research, teaching and impact.
Each university in the rankings has a detailed profile, with a breakdown of its overall scores across the rankings and supplementary data designed to help students. For example, there are data on the staff-to-student ratio at each university, the total income per student, the proportion of international students and the gender breakdown of students.
