Unified KYC system soon? TRAI to propose this to check fraudulent callers and spammers

New Delhi: Soon there could be a unified know-your-customer system to check fraudulent callers and spammers. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India chairman PD Vaghela on Sunday said that the regulator will propose to set up a unified KYC system which would be accessible by all telecom operators.

“There should be a unified KYC (know-your-customer) system. All telecom operators should be able to use it. This we are going to include in one of the consultation papers, which we are going to issue on compulsory caller ID display,” Vaghela said at the India Mobile Congress.

The need for such a system arises as currently it is hard to find the actual culprit who has engaged in fraudulent calls and messages. To resolve the same, the telecom regulator is exploring several mechanisms.

Speaking at the event, Vaghela noted that now spammers have started using another number after blocking their previous number and using proxy servers. The telecom regulator is working with service providers to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect fraudulent callers and spammers.

Moreover, TRAI will look to address privacy concerns around people who do not want their number to be displayed when they make calls, the chairman underscored.

Meanwhile, the new telecom bill has proposed up to one-year imprisonment for giving false identity for availing telecom services to check frauds and criminal activities.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had recently said that the government through its telecom bill is aiming to help subscribers get relief from spam calls and messages. He added that the bill will work as protection of the users.

“It will take at least 6-10 months before this bill becomes an Act. After the consultation process, we will prepare the final draft. Post that it will go to Parliament for consideration and passing. We are expecting cyber frauds to come down after it becomes the law,” the minister had said.
