What comes as a big blow to the Indian team’s chances of winning the T20 World Cup 2022, marquee pacer Jasprit Bumrah has reportedly been ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. Bumrah is said to have suffered a stress fracture in his back which will take 4 to 6 months to heal.
As per a report in PTI, Bumrah will not require surgery for the serious back injury but his chances of returning for the T20 World Cup are next to none. He had not travelled with the Indian team to Trivandrum either.
Bumrah had also missed the Asia Cup 2022 due to an injury before marking his return in the T20I series against Australia. He played the second and the third T20I against Australia but was ruled out of the 1st T20I against South Africa as well.
It was reported that the pace marksman wasn’t 100% fit to feature against the Proteas. But now, it has been reported that Bumrah’s injury is quite a serious one. Bumrah’s absence from the Indian team is a big one, especially considering the manner in which Indian pacers were taken apart in the Asia Cup.
The likes of Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar and Avesh Khan are all pretty talented but none of them comes close to the impact Bumrah can make with the ball. Though Harshal and Arshdeep did well in Bumrah’s absence against South Africa in Trivandrum on Wednesday, to pin all hopes on them in the T20 World Cup could be too big a ask.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to make an official statement on the state of Bumrah’s injury. Some former cricketers even felt that Bumrah’s return for the Australia series was a premature one. A few even recommended giving Bumrah an extended break to have him fit for the T20 World Cup in Australia. But now, it seems the case is already over.
