Bank holidays in September: Will banks remain closed for Onam on September 7, 8?

New Delhi: The month of September has a total of eight bank holidays across the country. These 8 days are, however, apart from the weekend holidays on second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays. It may be noted that the banks in India follow the gazetted holidays. While all banks remain shut on public holidays, some banks observe regional festivals and holidays.

With First Onam and Thiruvonam falling on Wednesday and Thursday, there’s confusion among people as to whether banks will remain closed on September 7 and 8. A major festival in Kerala, Onam commemorates the good governance that existed under the rule of Mahabali, a mythical king who ruled Kerala.

As there are several occasions on which banks in different observe different holidays, banks in Kerala will remain shut to mark the festival of Onam. Banks in Kerala will be closed on these dates:

September 7 – First Onam – Kochi, Thiruvanthapuram

September 8 – Thiruvonam – Kochi, Thiruvanthapuram

September 10 – Sree Naravana Guru Javanthi- Kochi, Thiruvanthapuram

September 21 – Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day- Kochi, Thiruvanthapuram

The Reserve Bank of India has categorised holidays under three categories — Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday; and Banks’ Closing of Accounts. While planning bank-related work, people are advised to check the holiday date in their respective states.
