As the country witnesses a spurt in crime against women, an MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Baljinder Kaur, was seen getting assaulted allegedly by her husband in a viral video on social media. The incident took place in the MLA’s Punjab home. It evoked extreme reactions as people were shocked to witness an MLA getting assaulted.
The MLA could be seen engaged in a heated argument with a group of men who surrounded her, later she was slapped by a man who was reported to be her husband.
As reported by the Tribune, Punjab State Commission for Women chairperson Manisha Gulati took note of the issue and said, “I have seen the video of Baljinder Kaur on social media. We will take a suo motu notice of the incident. It is upsetting that a woman who raises public issues faces harassment at home.”
According to the latest report of the NCRB, Punjab saw a jump of 17 per cent in crime against women — from 4,838 cases in 2020 to 5,662 cases in 2021. In Punjab, a total of 508 rape incidents took place in 2021 as against 504 in 2020, while the rape attempt cases were 60 in 2021 as against 53 in 2020. The cases of assault on women to outrage their modesty dropped to 688 in 2021 as against 732 in 2020 in the state.
