LPG Cylinder Gets Cheaper: The prices of 19kg LPG cylinders have been slashed by Rs 91.50, state-owned fuel retailers said in a notification on Thursday, September 1. The new prices have come into effect from today, as per the website of Indian Oil Corporation. With this, the price of the commercial cylinder has declined to Rs 1,885.00, from the earlier Rs 1,976.50. However, there has been no change in the price of the domestic LPG cylinder, which is the 14.2 kg cylinder.

In Mumbai, the 19-kg LPG cylinder will now cost Rs 1,844, instead of Rs 1,936.50. In Kolkata, the 19-kg cylinder will be available at Rs 1,995, down from Rs 2,095.50 earlier. In Chennai, it will now be priced at Rs 2,045. Rates differ from state to state depending on the local VAT. According to Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), the price has also been reduced in the same range in other metros. Commercial LPG rates are revised once a month.
This price revision will benefit hotels, restaurants and other business establishments that use gas cylinders. However, there is no relief for households as there has been no change in the price of domestic LPG cylinders.
On August 1, the prices of a 19-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi were cut by Rs 36. In July, the price of a 19-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi has been slashed by Rs 198. Earlier, the price was slashed by Rs 135 with effect from June 1. However, the price of a 14.2-kg domestic cooking cylinder has remained unchanged. Consumers of domestic LPG cylinders, on the other hand, were hit by a hike in July. The prices of domestic cooking cylinders were hiked on July 6.
Meanwhile, domestic LPG cylinders are still burning a hole people’s pockets. The price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder was hiked by Rs 50 in July. Consumers who were paying Rs 1,003.50 for a 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi are now paying Rs 1,053.50. In Kolkata, rates went up from Rs 1,029 per cylinder to Rs 1,079. In Mumbai and Chennai, the domestic 14.2-kg cylinder is now priced at Rs 1,052. 50 and Rs 1,068. 50 respectively.
Note that in India, the oil marketing companies (OMCs) sell 14.2-kg cylinders to domestic households at the prices prevalent in the open market, but the government provides subsidies for 12 such cylinders to beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana each year through a direct benefit transfer to their bank accounts.
Meanwhile, it has been more than three months since petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged across India. On Thursday, September 1, the fuel rates remained the same. The prices of petrol and diesel were revised all across the country on May 22 by the central government.

According to data available on the website of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), petrol in Delhi currently costs Rs. 96.72 per litre while the cost of diesel is Rs. 89.62 per litre. In Maharashtra, the prices of petrol and diesel are Rs. 106.35 per litre and Rs. 94.28 per litre, respectively. In Kolkata, petrol is being sold at Rs. 106.03 per litre and diesel is priced at Rs. 92.76 per litre. Petrol’s rate in Chennai is Rs. 102.63 per litre while diesel costs Rs. 94.24 per litre in the same state.
