Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal has been remanded to CBI custody for four more days in the cattle smuggling case. The Birbhum TMC president was picked up by the CBI on August 12 from his Bolpur home after the central probe agency said it had found Mondal’s direct involvement in the cattle smuggling scam.
He was remanded to CBI custody till August 20. On Saturday, Anubrata Mondal’s lawyer prayed for bail, citing the TMC leader’s poor health.
During the hearing in the special CBI court in Asansol, the probe agency said Anubrata is a “powerful person” and his bail would affect the ongoing probe.
The CBI on Saturday also conducted a raid at one rice mill here allegedly owned by Anubrata Mondal. During the raid, the CBI sleuths found several high-end vehicles parked inside the premises of the mill, PTI reported.
The CBI has said that Anubrata Mondal’s bodyguard Saigal Hossain, who is also in jail in the same case, was the mediator between Mondal and alleged cattle smuggler Enamul Haque.
Anubrata Mondal’s name came up in the cattle smuggling scam case after the CBI registered an FIR in 2020. According to the CBI, between 2015 and 2017, over 20,000 cattle heads had been seized by the Border Security Force (BSF) as they were being smuggled across the border.
