Mauritius, one of the most sought-after honeymoon destinations in the world, has finally lifted a number of COVID-19 restrictions to boost tourism in the country. The South African nation had put a ban on public gatherings due to the pandemic. But now, the country has scrapped these restrictions along with removing a public mask mandate.
A heaven in the Indian Ocean, this island nation is noted for its pristine beaches, secluded islands and luxury abodes. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth took to national radio and said, “Difficult decisions had to be taken, including total containment with its consequences on the economy. We have not been in a hurry to reopen our borders and it has been done in stages and we have noted that it is a formula that has worked. Now, it is with confidence that we can enter a new phase.”
Masks mandates will still be in place for some indoor settings such as hospitals and trains. Bars and nightclubs have reopened with full capacity and restrictions on public gatherings have also been lifted.
The government has also allowed picnics at beaches which were restricted until now. The PM also urged the public to take precautions when it comes to wearing masks to help contain the spread of the virus.
Apparently, Mauritius started welcoming international travellers at the start of October last year only to boost its tourism industry after remaining shut for a long time. But soon after, the restrictions related to the pandemic were reimposed after the country was hit by a new wave.
