The Centre has provided the Opposition’s presidential candidate, Yashwant Sinha, with ‘Z’ category armed security cover of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The former Union Minister was announced as the Opposition’s presidential candidate on June 21. After Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah, and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, Gopal Krishna Gandhi, refused to contest the elections, Sinha’s name suddenly came into the limelight.
On Tuesday, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sinha said it was time to step aside from party politics and work for a larger national interest.
“I am grateful to Mamataji for the honour and prestige she bestowed on me in the TMC. Now a time has come when for a larger national cause, I must step aside from the party to work for greater opposition unity. I am sure she approves of the step,” Sinha tweeted.
Sinha is scheduled to file his nomination papers on Thursday, June 27 at 11.30 am.
