Reliance Jio has secretly increased the price of one of its prepaid plans. Jio has hiked the price by Rs 150 for the Rs 749 prepaid plan. The Rs 749 prepaid plan was a long-term prepaid plan for JioPhone users. The new price of the yearly plan is Rs 899. The Jio website reflects the new price of the prepaid plan. Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio have increased the tariff on their prepaid plans back in November 2021.Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal has hinted that the second phase of the price hike will take place soon.
An ET report had previously stated that the market could survive another price hike because the telecom operators did not lose their user base even when the tariffs were hiked by 25 per cent. That is because there are currently three privately-owned telecom subscribers and the prices have been hiked across the companies. People did migrate to Jio from Vodafone because the Jio plans are comparatively cheaper than both Airtel and Vodafone, but most users remained on the same platform because there was another viable option to consider. Interestingly, the tariffs in India are amongst the lowest globally.
Reliance Jio for now has only increased the price of a single prepaid plan for JioPhone. The development was first spotted by Telecom Talk.
