A bank manager from Rajasthan was shot dead by suspected militants in South Kashmir’s Kulgam Thursday, days after a woman teacher was killed outside a school in the district, according to the police.
The militants fired at the bank manager, identified as Vijay Kumar from Hanumangarh, of the Ellaqui Dehati Bank (EDB) at the Areh Mohanpora village in Kulgam. Kumar was critically wounded in the attack and shifted to a hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
“Terrorists fired upon a bank employee (manager) at Ellaqie Dehati Bank at Areh Mohanpora in Kulgam district. He received grievous gunshot injuries in this terror incident. He is a resident of Hanumangarh Rajasthan. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” tweeted Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Police sources Kumar joined his new posting only a few days ago.
Soon after the attack, a joint team of J-K Police, Indian Army and paramilitary forces cordoned off the area to trace the militants responsible for the attack.
The killing of the bank manager has come days after a woman teacher from Jammu was shot dead on Tuesday outside her school in the Gopalpora village of Kulgam and despite heightened security in the Valley for protection of the employees from outside Kashmir and belonging to the minority community.
The Kashmir Valley has seen a sudden jump in the attacks on non-local employees posted in the region. Since May 12, when a Kashmiri Hindu employee Rahul Bhat was killed inside his office at Budgam, four employees belonging to the minority community have been shot dead in Kashmir.
The killings have rattled the J&K administration that is already grappling with protests by Kashmiri Hindu employees appointed under the Prime Minister’s package and posted in the Valley. The employees have been demanding their transfer out of the Kashmir Valley.
