Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a beneficial housing scheme launched by the Government of India. It was launched on 25th June 2015. The Mission provides Central Assistance to the implementing agencies through States/Union Territories (UTs) and Central Nodal Agencies (CNAs) for providing houses to all eligible families/ beneficiaries against the validated demand for houses for about 1.12 cr. The scheme is for the benefit of economically weaker sections, lower-income groups urban and rural poor.
In continuation of this Government’s efforts towards the empowerment of women from EWS and LIG unlike earlier schemes, PMAY (U) has made a mandatory provision for the female head of the family to be the owner or co-owner of the house under this Mission.
It also offers interest subsidies on housing loans to eligible candidates who belong to the economically weaker, low-income, and mid-income groups. The program is divided into two sections, PMAY Urban (PMAY – U) and PMAY Gramin (PMAY – G) that benefit the urban and rural populations, respectively.

There are four components of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
- Economically Weaker Section (EWS): Your family’s annual income should not be more than Rs.3 lakh.
- Lower Income Group (LIG): Your annual household income is between Rs.3 lakh and Rs. 6 lakh.
- Middle Income Group (MIGs): Your annual household income ranges from Rs.6 lakh to Rs. 18 lakh.
- Slum Dwellers: People living in slim areas.
HOW TO APPLY FOR PRADHAN MANTRI AWAS YOJNA ONLINE:
Step 1: Identify the category under which you qualify for PMAY.
Step 2: Then visit the official website: http://pmaymis.gov.in.
Step 3: Click on ‘Citizen Assessment’ under the main menu and select the applicant category.
Step 4: You will be redirected to a different page where you must enter your Aadhaar details.
Step 5: Fill out the online PMAY application with your personal, income, bank account details, and current residential address.
Step 6: Enter the captcha code, verify the details for accuracy, and submit it.

HOW TO APPLY FOR PRADHAN MANTRI AWAS YOJNA OFFLINE:
It is possible to apply for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana offline by filling up a form in the Common Service Centre (CSC) operated by the State Governments. Offline forms can be filled up for Rs. 25 plus the GST.
It is to be noted that no private individuals or companies are allowed to collect money to get benefits under this scheme.
You can also visit any bank, non-banking finance company, or housing finance company and fill out the scheme application form.
You must submit the documents cited in the form and check your eligibility before applying for this scheme.
HOW SLUM DWELLERS CAN APPLY FOR PRADHAN MANTRI AWAS YOJNA:
- Log on to the official Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana at pmaymis.gov.in
- Choose the ‘For Slum Dwellers’ option in the ‘Citizen Assessment’ dropdown.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and click submit. (The site will verify whether the Aadhaar details provided is correct).
- If the information provided is correct, you will be led to the next page where you will have to provide all the pertinent information regarding your name, income, no. of family members, residential address, contact number, age of the head of the family, religion, caste and the like.
- Once all the information is provided, scroll down, type the captcha code in the box, and click submit.
