Bappi Lahiri’s death comes close on the heels of ‘Nightingale of India’ Lata Mangeshkar who died of Covid-related complications on February 6 at the age of 92.
Veteran music composer and singer Bappi Lahiri was cremated in Mumbai this afternoon. The ‘Disco King’ died in a Mumbai hospital on Tuesday at the age of 69. He was suffering from multiple health issues and died of obstructive sleep apnea, doctors said.
The iconic singer’s mortal remains reached the crematorium in the morning and after a wait for the return of Lahiri’s son Bappa from the US to take part in the last rites, he was cremated. Visuals from the final procession showed Chitrani Lahiri, the musician’s wife, sobbing inconsolably.
The crematorium was bustling with people, videos showed, with several family members and Hindi film industry friends and collaborators of Lahiri paying their last respects.Many visited the family to extend their condolences at the Lahiri residence, a News18 report says.
His remains were intact with his signature style of layered jewellery and flamboyant clothes, the report says.

Bappi Lahiri had tested positive for Covid and was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital (the Mumbai hospital where Lata Mangeshkar died) last month. He had recovered after a few days.
Lahiri popularised disco music in the country in the 80’s and 90’s and frequently collaborated with ‘Disco Dancer’ Mithun Chakraborty.Born Alokesh Lahiri in West Bengal, Bappi Lahiri’s maternal uncle was legendary singer Kishore Kumar. Lahiri is survived by his wife Chitrani and children Bappa and Rema.
