Rohtang Pass is now closed for tourists. The Himachal Pradesh state government issued an order regarding this and stated that the famous Rohtang Pass will remain shut for tourists and day-trippers till April-end 2022.
As per the reports, the step has been taken due to extreme weather conditions and slippery roads that have made driving risky. As such, issuance of online Rohtang Pass permits will also be closed.
The state government, in its notification, stated that the movement of all types of vehicles towards Rohtang Pass beyond Kothi village will be prohibited until further order. Earlier, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) also suggested closure of the pass for civilians due to unfavorable weather conditions. The order further states that since the water is frozen at many locations, the roads might be slippery at certain points.
Reports have it that during the festive season and till the start of this month, the said tourist spot witnessed a large footfall of tourists, since it’s a crucial link that also leads to forward areas of Ladakh.
Located at the height of 13050 ft, it’s an important passage that connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. And now, as per the latest order, tourist vehicles will not be allowed beyond Kothi village.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army, police, and emergency service vehicles will be permitted through the Atal Tunnel.
