- Assam government has allowed resumption of physical classes for class 10 from September 20, 2021.

With the improvement in the COVID-19 scenario in the state, the Assam government has decided to commence physical classes for students of class 10. Classes will resume physically for students from September 20, 2021. The decision to reopen schools in the state was taken after a Cabinet meeting. The Cabinet meeting was conducted by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas Sharma and several other important members such as Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
Education Minster Ranoj Pegu has mentioned that the SOP for reopening schools in the state will be shared soon by the Education department. Assam government recently decided to reopen schools for class 12 students and higher education institutions for UG, PG students. However, the government did not make attendance compulsory for the students. Further, it was mentioned that in order to attend classes, students should have taken at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The total number of active cases of COVID-19 in the state is 5,396 cases. The death ratio due to COVID-19 in the state is 0.97%. Further, the number of people in Assam who received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine is 2,07,44,380. According to the discussion in the Cabinet meeting, High Schools, Madrassas, Residential Schools, Boarding Schools will reopen in the state. Further, the school authorities must ensure that all the workers and the employees in the school are fully vaccinated.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has also mentioned that a classroom should not have more than 30 students and proper social distancing should be mentioned. If some batches do have more than 30 students, they should be allotted different sections. Further, protocols such as wearing masks, proper sanitization of buildings will be followed.
Assam government has also added 9 new more colleges in the state. On September 15, 2021, the government laid the foundation stone for Government Law College, Jorhat. Further, the CM mentioned, “The Rs 14.74 cr institution will be completed in 2 years.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma announced from his official Twitter handle that under the National Education Policy 2020, as many as 3,000 High Schools will be upgraded to Senior Secondary Schools. The government has also decided to increase the number of Universities in Assam.
