VISAKHAPATNAM: Two persons lost their lives in separate incidents due to heavy rains that has been lashing the coastal areas of the state for the last two days. While a woman was washed away while crossing a stream in spate near Gubbala Mangamma temple in Buttayagudem mandal of West Godavari district, a 55-year-old man, identified as Goddeti Nagesh from Yedavalli village under Lingampalem mandal, died as the wall of his house caved in.
Elsewhere, two persons had a close shave when the car they were travelling in plunged into a canal near Gorinthota church at Undi in West Godavari district. The car hit a divider and plunged into the canal. Locals responded swiftly and managed to rescue them.
The woman from Eluru was going on a bike along with her brother to offer prayers at Gubbala Mangamma temple when she slipped and fell when they were crossing Yerra Yekkudu Kaluva stream. While her brother and two of his friends managed to escape, she was washed away. Search is on to trace her, Buttayagudem police station sub-inspector Jaya Babu said.

Meanwhile, under the influence of the low pressure over Bay of Bengal, heavy rainfall has been predicted in several coastal areas for the next two days. On Monday, Kakinada town in East Godavari received the highest rainfall of 14.6 cm. Several areas in Vizag and Vizianagaram, which received 13 cm rainfall on Sunday, were inundated.

IMD officials said the low-pressure system, which developed under the influence of cyclonic circulation over north and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, is likely to move west-northwest wards during the next two-three days, triggering heavy rains in north coastal AP, Yanam and Rayalaseema region.
The water level in Srisailam reservoir in Kurnool district is steadily rising following heavy inflow from the upstream areas. The water level stood at 873.72ft against the full reservoir level of 885ft at 3 pm on Monday. The inflow was 47,069 cusecs against an outflow of 35,539 cusecs. Crest gates could be lifted anytime if the inflow continues, said irrigation department officials.
