HIGHLIGHTS

  • The UIDAI has suspended the Address Validation letter service from its official website.
  • Aadhaarcard holders can now order PVC cards online or can take a printout of the e-Aadhaar themselves.
  • PVC cards have security features such as QR code, ghost image, hologram, micro text and guilloche pattern.

Be it buying a new house, purchasing a car, enrolling for higher studies or taking a new SIM card, Aadhaar card is one of the most important and crucial documents for all Indian citizens. The 12-digit Aadhaar number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI) on behalf of the Government is a proof of identity. In order to avail the various services and government schemes, Aadhaar cardholders must keep their Aadhaar card updated.

Various services are also offered by UIDAI and Aadhaar cardholders can update their name, address, date of birth, mobile number and photograph via its official website. However, in recent times, UIDAI has discontinued two services linked to Aadhaar card.

It is to be noted that every year, there are several services and new changes brought in by UIDAI this year, including the streamlined method of updating demographic and biometric data on Aadhaar card.

Address Validation letter no longer available:

The UIDAI has shut the facility which allowed citizens to update their address in the Aadhaar card through the use of an Address Validation letter. The service has been suspended until further notification and the option for Address Validation letter has been removed from the UIDAI website.

This may create problems for those who wish to update their address on their Aadhaar card and especially for those who live in rented accommodation. On its official Twitter handle, UIDAI wrote, “Dear Resident, Address Validation Letter service is no longer available.” (sic)

You will now require another form of address proof to get the change updates. You also have the option to update your Aadhaar card online through the UIDAI website through other forms of residential proof.

Here’s how you can update your address details online:

Step 1: Visit the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP) if you want to update your address details online. You can visit the website by clicking on this link: https://ssup.uidai.gov.in/ssup/

Step 2: Now, click on the ‘Proceed to Update Aadhaar’ option. You will be asked to enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and other credentials to complete the verification process.

Step 3: You will receive a One-Time pass password on your registered number. Once your address details in the Aadhaar card is verified, it would be changed successfully.

Step 4: If you want to update the address offline, you can visit your nearest Permanent Enrollment centre with any proof of address document if your mobile number is not linked to your Aadhaar card.

UIDAI to issue only PVC cards:

UIDAI has also discontinued the service of issuing larger paper prints of Aadhaar cards and will now issue only polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cards. This means that in case you have lost your Aadhaar card or you want to update it, then you can download Aadhaar PVC card rather than reprinting it.

Aadhaarcard holders can now order PVC cards online or can take a printout of the e-Aadhaar themselves. The service has been discontinued as UIDAI thinks that the new debit-sized ID-Proof is more effective and portable.

PVC cards are not only easy to carry in wallets but also provide various benefits and security features such as QR codes, ghost images, hologram, micro text and guilloche pattern. According to UIDAI rules, you will have to pay Rs 50 (including GST and speed post charges) for downloading the PVC version of the Aadhaar card.
