On Monday night, authorities removed a Bharat Mata statue located near Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s residence in Tadepalle town in Guntur district of the state. This has triggered widespread outrage across Andhra Pradesh.
The government has claimed that the idol holding the national flag was removed in order to widen the road from Buckingham Canal to Nuthakki.
They said the Bharat Mata idol has been shifted to the tehsildhar’s office in a tractor and will be reinstalled after completion of the road widening work.
Meanwhile, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) have condemned the removal of the idol in a “hush-hush manner”.
Nara Lokesh, a TDP member of the legislative council, has alleged that houses of locals located near the chief minister’s residence were earlier demolished due to security reasons. And now the statue of Bharat Mata has been removed, he said.
“Jagan Reddy got a temple for himself worth Rs 2 crore. The removal of the idol of Bharat Mata near his house is proof of his authoritarian and factional mindset. The statue of Bharata Mata should be restored and the government should apologise for it,” he demanded.
