Assam Man Held in Meghalaya Explosives Case

Over 2,000 aluminum improvised electrical detonators (IEDs) and more than 4,000 gelatin sticks were seized from a vehicle in Meghalaya on Friday

MEGHALAYA: A man was arrested by police at Nongpoh in Meghalaya on Tuesday. The arrested person identified as Hasem Ali, who hails from Pathar village in Kamrup district, was held in connection with a recent case of seizure of a haul of explosives.

According to the latest reports, over 2,000 aluminum improvised electrical detonators (IEDs) and more than 4,000 gelatin sticks were seized by police from a vehicle in Meghalaya on Friday. As per the police, a team of cops based on a tip-off intercepted a vehicle (bearing an Assam registration number) near the Byrnihat police outpost while it was on its way to Guwahati.

The vehicle tried to evade the police check post, the police officials succeeded in stopping it. On searching the vehicle, 2,044 IEDs and 4,027 gelatin sticks were recovered. The driver was arrested then.

On Tuesday, Kamrup police said that the consignment of explosives belonged to Ali. The apprehension took place today afternoon from Alikash Ghat on the banks of the river Brahmaputra, Kamrup police added.

It may be mentioned that at least two persons, including a woman, suffered critical injuries in an IED blast by militants in Shillong earlier this month. The blast took place in the Meghalaya capital’s popular market hub in the Laitumkhrah area.

Militants belonging to outlawed outfits, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) had claimed responsibility for the blast. Security has been beefed up in the state following the incident.
