The Chandigarh International Airport is going to be closed for five hours everyday until September 18. The airport has however said that no civil fight operations would be affected due to the closure. The Chandigarh airport is closed for five hours every day due to maintenance work on the runway, and installation of runway lighting system.
According to the Airport Chief Executive Officer, Ajay Bhardwaj, the airport is currently closed from 11 pm to 4:30 am.
Bhardwaj said in a statement, “Runway closure has been sought by the air force for installation of lights on the runway and annual maintenance. Work is already going on and we hope that the new powerful lighting system will be made functional by September 18.”
He also said that the last flight arrives from Bengaluru at 10:05 pm, and then departs for Bengaluru at 7:15 am. There are no scheduled flights during the closure time. The airport has a total of 32 flights operating.
The airport’s runway length was also worked on, as it increased back in 2018. During that time, the airport was closed from February 12 to 16, and no flights were operating here during that time.
The latest closure will see the runway being made suitable for wide-body aircraft. There has been a high demand for international flights to Europe, Canada, UK, USA, and other countries. With the remodeled runway, this would then be a possibility.
