Oppo’s latest Reno 6 5G comes with a good mix of specifications and an attractive design but is all of that worth Rs 29,990?

Oppo’s Reno 6 series arrived in India with two smartphones: the Reno 6 Pro 5G is the star of the series, and the cheaper Reno 6 5G is suited for the masses. I reviewed the Reno 6 5G recently and found it is a better deal than the Reno 6 Pro 5G. For Rs 29,990, the Reno 6 5G comes with the MediaTek Dimensity 900 processor, a Full-HD+ AMOLED display with a high refresh rate, a fast-charging battery, and more importantly, a design that no one can ignore.
The Reno 6 5G is good enough for most users and the low price makes it somewhat a decent deal. However, when you look at the market, you have options that are far more compelling in terms of specifications and that, I think, is what will go well with power consumers. But despite all that competition, Oppo is optimistic its Reno 6 5G will find its place among the best-selling smartphones in the mid-range market. That optimism comes from the fact that the Reno 6 5G looks insanely gorgeous. That is a good thing, but does the rest of the features and specifications of the phone justify the price of Rs 29,990?
I wrote down the answer to that question in my review but it may be long for some. For those people, here is the TL;DR of the review in five points.
Point 1: Because of this, Oppo is so confident about strong sales of the Reno 6 5G. The Reno Glow design on the Reno 6 5G is one of the best ones I have seen on a phone so far this year. The iridescent backside is one thing, but the Reno 6 5G goes on to borrow the design of the iPhone 12 Pro to feature a design that looks super attractive. The phone has a protruded camera island, which looks nice, but, otherwise, causes problems when the phone is kept on a plain surface because it makes it wobble. Using a mobile case will solve this problem but lessen the beauty of the back.
Point 2: The Oppo Reno 6 5G comes with a 6.43-inch Full-HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. This is a good display because not only does it show good colours in videos and other content, but also because it can be bright enough for reading the text under direct sunlight. The display has a punch-hole on the top and it causes no distraction. I loved watching Netflix and Amazon Prime Video shows on the Reno 6 5G. Even for gaming, the display is big and good enough, but the high refresh rate is not supported on most popular games.
Point 3: Powering the Reno 6 5G is an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 900 processor. It is the first time for this processor in India. I faced no issues with it while working on multiple apps on the phone. Switching between apps is easy and shows no lags. I could even keep one or two games open in the background without making the phone struggle to perform. That is because of the 12GB of RAM on my unit. For gaming, the processor is fast enough to handle medium graphics and transitions. But you may find the game lagging when you switch to high graphics settings.
Point 4: The Reno 6 5G comes with a 64-megapixel main camera along with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera. I found the primary camera works really well in daylight conditions. It retains an immaculate amount of details in them. The night mode is also good, but sometimes you will notice grains in photos. The ultra-wide-angle camera does the job and clicks decent photos with a little loss of detail. The selfie camera is a 32-megapixel shooter and it clicks favourable photos. The video recording is also good on this phone.
Point 5: Inside the Oppo Reno 6 5G is a 4300mAh battery that supports 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging technology. The battery easily lasts a day with normal usage, but even if it does not for you, for some reason, the fast-charging can top it up in a little over 30 minutes. I really like this feature on the Reno 6 5G.
Oppo Reno 6 5G review verdict
The Oppo Reno 6 5G ticks nearly all the boxes except for a few. It lacks a stereo speaker system, something I would have loved on a phone that costs Rs 29,990. Among other things, the performance of the Reno 6 5G is a bit lower than that of the competition, which includes the OnePlus Nord 2. Realme has freshly launched the GT Master Edition phone in India for Rs 25,999 and it brings a faster processor than what the Reno 6 5G has. In terms of value for money, the Reno 6 5G falls short of spirit. But otherwise, it is a beautiful phone that some people would love to flaunt.
