Bhopal Police arrests 22-year-old MBA student in online fraud case

Bhopal Police has arrested a 22-year-old MBA student for providing bank accounts to a Bihar-based online fraudster.

The cybercrime branch of Bhopal Police has arrested a 22-year-old MBA student for allegedly arranging and providing bank accounts to a Bihar-based online fraudster. The accused has been identified as Anjali Sakre, a resident of Betul in Madhya Pradesh.

The other accused, Ajay Raj, is a resident of Bihar and is absconding. The accused met each other while working at a call centre in Bhopal, police said.

Police have recovered passbooks of three bank accounts, cheque books, 22 ATM cards, one mobile phone, and two sim cards from the accused.

Police said transactions worth over Rs 60 lakh were done through accounts arranged by the accused and passed on to the Bihar-based fraudster.

According to the police, Anjali befriended her landlord’s daughter some time in 2020 and took details of her accounts, saying she wanted to transfer her scholarship money.

The account details were passed on to the main accused, who used it to keep money obtained through online fraud. The same amount was later transferred into some other account.

“Initially, the arrested accused use bank accounts of people whom she could convince but later on started convincing her family members and close associates to open fresh accounts with mobile numbers that she had access to,” police said.

The landlord’s daughter was staying outside Bhopal after she got married. Recently, she was alerted by bank authorities that transactions worth lakhs were being done from her account. She came to Bhopal and lodged a complaint.
