AHMEDABAD: Congress councillors, reduced to just 24 in the AMC, are a divided force again.
The Congress party has failed to appoint the leader of the opposition (LoP) following a rift involving four MLAs from the Walled City and the city’s east.
For over five months, the Congress has not been able to appoint the LoP. Fifteen of the 24 councillors have given a memorandum, warning the party against any decision to name an LOP who is not accepted by all councillors.
The councillors have warned that the party should not appoint a junior as the leader of the opposition. The councillors have threatened to resign if such a move is made.
A Congress councillor said that for the 12-member AMC school board, one candidate each has been fielded by the Congress and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which has six councillors.
The BJP has fielded 11 candidates. Voting is scheduled on August 5.
The Congress councillor said that there is a possibility of cross-voting by the Congress councillors, which will benefit the AIMIM.
Each candidate requires 16 votes to win. The Congress leader said that the AIMIM hopes to get nine Congress votes.
