In Assam, 7.6 million Assam residents, including the 6.3 million who received the first dose of the covid-19 and 1.3 million who received both doses, were vaccinated.
Northeast India has suffered when the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic hit the country. However, the citizens of the region are beginning to see a glimmer of hope as recently the states of Northeast India have seen a major decline in the cases after a huge surge in the initial stage. All the states of the region have shown a positive decline except for Meghalaya which experienced an upward trend due to new cases in prison in Ri-Bhoi district.
Tripura has one of the highest vaccination figures in the country as it’s the first state to vaccinate 100% of its 45 plus population with the first dose of Covid-19 vaccination. 80% of the state’s 18-plus population has got at least one dose of the vaccine.
Thousands of vaccination camps have been regulated across the state with 5,000 employees, 20,000 healthcare workers, police and security personnel taking vaccines to remote villages. The vaccination took place in two phases during which over five lakh people were inoculated. Till July 3, 2.596 million vaccine doses were administered among eligible beneficiaries in the state.
In Assam, 7.6 million Assam residents, including the 6.3 million who received the first dose of the covid-19 and 1.3 million who received both doses, were vaccinated. However, due to the irregular supply of vaccines, the plan to vaccinate 300,000 people daily has not been successful so far. Nagaland has started its unlock process while citizens are urged to adhere to covid guidelines and get vaccinated. The state has administered 529,849 vaccine doses to residents, including 67,090 who have taken both doses so far.
In Arunachal Pradesh, 624,912 vaccine doses had been administered to residents including the 89,786, who had got both doses, till July 3. Meghalaya still seems to be lagging behind as the East Khasi Hills continues to be the worst district in the state 4,948 positive cases in the month of June. As of now the state has vaccinated 733,000 residents. Whereas, in Sikkim, the state government is awaiting 15,230 vaccines to be made available by this month to the STNM Hospital while 24,000 vaccines are expected in the Central Referral Hospital by next week. The entire population of this state is only 7 lakh and a total of only 14 lakh of vaccines is needed. Since this state is heavily dependent on tourism, it has also opened its gates to fully vaccinated tourists.
Even though Manipur saw some improvements, the TPR remains high at 11.40%, much lower than 15.54% recorded a fortnight earlier on June 21. In this state, even the insurgent groups are helping the vaccination programs by announcing cash prizes for the first three fully vaccinated villages. Though Mizoram has administered over 600,000 vaccine doses (nearly half the state’s population of 1.1 million), the state is witnessing over 200 new cases daily in the past few days and the TPR on Saturday was recorded at 6.75%.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh has also said in his statement that he is in regular contact with all the states of the Northeast and is staying updated about the covid situation and health infrastructure requirements of all the eight states. One hopes that the decrease in the Covid cases trend in all eight states will continue so that the country can recover completely from the second wave of covid.
