Dehradun: Several low-lying areas in Srinagar city Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district have been submerged after the water level rising in the Alaknanda river due to incessant rains.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heaviest rains are expected over the eastern side of Uttarakhand due to the prevalence of southeasterly wind around this aforementioned system.
Owing to this, a daily rainfall total of 80-100 mm is possible over Uttarakhand on Saturday. Rainfall amount will also increase around the centre of the cyclonic circulation area including east Uttar Pradesh and west Bihar from Saturday to Sunday with daily rainfall figures reaching 50-80 mm.
Earlier on Friday, heavy rainfall threw life out of gear in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and halted traffic movement on several highways. The Badrinath national highway was blocked by rubble at two places between Pipalkoti and the Himalayan temple, while the Gwaldam national highway is blocked between Tharali and Karnaprayag following the heavy downpour, the District Disaster Management Centre here said.
The Gwaldam highway links the Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand. The Gairsain highway is also blocked between Simly and Adi Badri, it said.
