AMARAVATI: The state government has allocated two acres of land to Olympic medallist and badminton player PV Sindhu in Visakhapatnam. The allocated land parcel is located in China Gadili village on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam city.

Sindhu has already assured the state government to set up the academy at a cost of Rs 10 crore. The land will be registered in favour of a trust to be set up by Sindhu. She will have to complete and open the academy for players as per timelines fixed by the youth services and sports department.

“The land has been allocated to Sindhu as part of promoting sports in the state. We will shortly get an international standard badminton academy and sports school in Visakhapatnam,” said sports minister M (Avanti) Srinivasa Rao.

According to the government, Sindhu has informed that the process of registration of the trust will be completed shortly. Principal secretary (revenue) V Usha said that Sindhu has assured to submit a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed academy and the sports school. Sindhu has said that the academy will be constructed in two phases with an expenditure of Rs 5 crore in each phase. “Sindhu has assured that she will abide by all rules of the government and the land will only be used for the development of the badminton academy and the sports school,” said Usha Rani.

The government has directed the youth services and the sports department to ensure that the land is used only for setting up the academy as the land is very valuable. It has also made it clear that the academy shall serve talented but poor players without a commercial outlook.
