Chandigarh: A 51-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her brother’s son over ancestral land at a village in Ambala district of Haryana.
According to the police, the victim was identified as Surinder Kaur, an unmarried woman who was locally known for doing religious activities diligently. On June 9, she left to participate in a religious function in Mathedi area and went missing. Following this, her brother Amarjeet lodged a missing complaint with the police.
Kaur’s family suspected that Amarjeet’s son, Gurpreet alias Preet, might be behind her disappearance as he eyed her share of ancestral land. Based on the family’s suspicion, the police questioned Gurpreet and he confessed to having killed Kaur and buried her body in their ancestral land.
“The victim’s family said she had four sisters, one of whom had died, and a brother, Amarjeet. The siblings’ father had left behind 21 acres to be divided among only the sisters. As Surinder was unmarried and had no heir, Gurpreet wanted to grab her share of the land,” a report published by Hindustan Times stated.
According to the police, Kaur requested Gurpreet to drop her at Mathedi, where she had to participate in a religious event. Gurpreet and his friend, identified as Kaala, took her in her car and strangled her to death. Thereafter, they buried her body in the ancestral land. The accused left the victim’s mobile with the receptionist of a hotel in Kurukshetra, in a bid to mislead the police.
Gurpreet has been arrested, while efforts are being made to nab his friend. Police have added the murder charge in the missing person’s case registered at Naggal police station.
