A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression that will cross the West Bengal and Odisha coasts on May 26 as a “very severe cyclonic storm”, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday. The depression is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm, “Yaas”, by Monday, it added.
“The cyclone will intensify into a very cyclonic storm and will cross the coast of north Odisha and West Bengal between Paradeep (Odisha) and Sagar Island with wind speed gusting to 185 Kmph. If it had entered Bangladesh, there might have been some impact, but now Cyclone Yaas will not enter Assam,” Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, told TOI.
“Thunderstorm with lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram,” Shaw said.
