Tamil Nadu extends night curfew and Sunday lockdown ‘until further orders’

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government extended night curfew and complete lockdown on Sundays until further orders. The Covid-19 restrictions introduced in April will continue in May as well.


On May 2, there would not be restrictions for the movement/transport of officials/party functionaries, candidates, chief agents, counting agents, food suppliers in connection with the counting of votes polled for the assembly election and Kanyakumari Lok Sabha bypoll, said an order issued by chief secretary Rajeev Ranjan.

The night curfew will continue to be enforced throughout the state from 10pm to 4am. During the night curfew, private/public bus transport, auto, taxi and private vehicles will not be permitted. Intra-state and inter-state private/public bus transport will not be permitted from 10pm to 4pm.


Chennai Metro Rail will be permitted to operate skeletal services during complete lockdown on Sundays.

Candidates/students appearing for the SSC/UPSC/RRB/TNPSC examinations will be permitted on production of valid admit cards.

Hotels that are willing to function as Covid care centres in coordination with private hospitals having adequate infrastructure and health facilities will be permitted as Covid care centres. “The officials of the health department will inspect and accord necessary permission in this regard. Guests will not be permitted in the hotels functioning as Covid care centres,” the order said.
