01 The Gateway to Kumaon
Located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand is the Gateway of Kumaon called Haldwani. It is the largest city in Kumaon, and a major trading hub. Haldwani has got its name from the Haldu tree which grows abundantly in the region.

Like Dehradun, Haldwani is quite a developed city populated with cafes, restaurants, educational institutes, and shopping arcades. Here, you can experience the local traditional culture of Kumaon due to the presence of artisans and artists.

03 Exploring Haldwani
Gaula Barrage is a very popular tourist hub built on the Gaula River. It is also a important source of water which serves the purpose of irrigating the land. Another wonderful place in Haldwani is Kali Chaur mandir. As is evident with the name, it is a shrine dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is believed that this place was lost it anonymity until the goddess herself commanded one of her devotees from Kolkata to search this site and establish a temple for her. The temple is located in a forested area located 10 km from Haldwani. Long ago, this place was a sylvan asylum of the ancient sages where they worshipped goddess Kali to attain her blessings. Sanjay Van, ideal for picnicking, is a verdant area that is the part of Tanda Range Forest located 23 km from Haldwani city.

04 Travelling to Haldwani
To reach Haldwani, one of the most commonly preferred means of transport is train. Tourists board a train to Kathgodam railway station which is located only a few kilometres from Haldwani city. Another popular railway station is Lal Kuan railway station located about 17 km from Haldwani which is also one of the busiest railheads in the Kumaon region. State-run and private buses can be boarded from cities like Delhi to reach Haldwani and Kathgodam.

05 More on Haldwani
Tourist accommodations are available around the Kathgodam railway station and on Rampur Road. Visitors seeking mid-budget accommodations should check out the Market Road. As for the dining options, visit Kaladhungi Road and Stadium Road to find North Indian, Continental, Chinese and local food. However, you should definitely try the local bal mithai, dubke and churkani.
