The recent surge in the number of COVID-19 cases all over the country has been a real cause of concern for the class 10 class 12 board exam candidates. In several states, the respective state governments are closing down schools to contain the spread of the disease.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has not yet issued any official declaration regarding the postponement or cancellation of the board exams for class 10 class 12 board exam candidates. For the past two days, the hashtag “cancelboardexams2021” has been trending on Twitter. More than one lakh students of classes 10 and 12 have signed petitions urging the government to either cancel board exams scheduled to be held in May or conduct them in online mode. However, both the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) have said that adequate safety arrangements are being made for students and all COVID-19 guidelines will be followed during the exams. The CBSE board written exams are scheduled to start from May 4, 2021 and will continue till June 14, 2021.
Apart from the CBSE, the state boards also either have to take a call on the class 10 class 12 board exams amidst this rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the country. Though some states have decided upon the board exams, several other states are yet to decide whether to postpone the board exams for class 10 class 12 board exam candidates.
In Uttar Pradesh, the board exams for class 10 class 12 candidates have been postponed because of the panchayat polls in the state. Earlier, the UP board class 10 class 12 exams were scheduled to commence from April 24, 2021. As per the revised timetable, the board exams will take place from May 8, 2021 to May 28, 2021.
In Madhya Pradesh, the state government has decided to provide an option to the students of classes 9 to 12. Now, they can choose the mode of exam – offline or online. The Madhya Pradesh School Education Department has tweeted regarding this decision. The decision will be applicable to the students appearing for the class 10 and class 12 board exams, as well as for the students appearing for their pre-board exams in classes 9 and 11.
In case of Maharashtra, the Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad while speaking to The Times of India said, “I can’t say anything at this moment but, yes, a final decision will be taken this week itself. I will meet with various stakeholders and see what their views are about exams.” It is expected that a formal decision regarding the Maharashtra HSC and SSC board exams will be taken and announced by the end of this week.
Maharashtra has been so far the worst affected state in the spread of COVID-19 infection. The Maharashtra HSC exams for class 12 board exam candidates are scheduled to begin from April 23, 2021 and end on May 21, 2021. On the other hand, the SSC board theory exams for class 10 are scheduled to take place from April 29, 2021 to May 20, 2021. The exams are supposed to take place in the offline mode.
