To deal with the irregularities in income tax payment, the tax department has started taking stern actions against the offenders. The Income Tax Department has started sending notices on non-payment of taxes or irregularities. The notices are being sent for big and small amounts Zee Business’ Brajesh K. Mishra has the full report.
In the wake of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a directive in May asking the field staff to not send any communication, email or message to the tax payers which would create problems for them. This directive was issued by the CBDT on 8 May 2020.
The order was under implementation till 15-16 September, Mishra said adding that no emails were sent during this period. The objective of this move was to not create any further problems for people who have been hit because of the pandemic.
The CBDT has now asked its field officers to restart the question or notice process with the tax payers regarding the tax demands or recoveries. The process is likely to start soon, Mishra added.
He said that there were very few income tax raids during this period which are now likely to go up. He however, said that the raids will be conducted only in situations where the need will be very high.
He said that an important reason behind this move has been the low tax collections by the government.
He said that the government was of the view that recoveries from those who have dues or from those who can pay, should be done.
The restrictions put against any adverse communications have now been lifted, Mishra said.
