Weather update: IMD predicts cloudy skies with light rain in Delhi; Issues red alert in Kerala

In Kerala, the IMD has sounded a red alert in Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Kannur and an orange alert in Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kasargod for Sunday.

In Delhi, the weather office has forecasted generally cloudy skies with light showers or drizzle on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 40 degrees and 30 degrees Celsius, respectively, in the national capital.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded a notch above normal at 39.4 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The minimum temperature had settled 0.6 notches above the season’s average at 28.6 degrees Celsius, it further said.

In Kerala, the IMD has sounded a red alert in Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Kannur and an orange alert in Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kasargod for Sunday.

“Kerala and Mahe are very likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall to extremely heavy falls (>204.4 mm) on 22nd & 23rd June and likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) during 24th-26th June, 2024,” the IMD said in a post on ‘X’.

A red alert means heavy to extremely heavy rainfall of over 20 cm in 24 hours. An orange alert indicates a very heavy downpour of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has issued an advisory in which it said that between June 23 and June 26, in certain areas of the Krishna basin, isolated heavy rains are also expected.

Thunderstorms in Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, on Sunday, rain with thunderstorms is likely to continue in Kota, Udaipur division, and surrounding areas. From Monday onwards, rain is predicted to increase in some parts of southeastern Rajasthan, said the weather department.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the MeT department also predicted heavy rain at some places in Kota and Udaipur divisions.
